Pliny the Elder is believed to be one of the first to pen words about the usage of beer hops.

Interestingly, Pliny the Elder is also credited with recording the expression “tracing lines round the human shadow.” This artistic description soon came to be more commonly known as a “silhouette.”

By definition, a silhouette is “a profile obtained by tracing the outline of a head or figure by means of its shadow.”

Today, silhouettes in the form of shadow puppets have become an imaginative fantastical part of our childhood years. Who hasn’t made a jumping bunny or a barking dog with the shadow of your hand on the wall late at night?

This unique history created an interesting intersection of “beer” and “silhouette” that we couldn’t ignore.
